HD Hyundai hydrogen tank technology breakthrough international certification, marine hydrogen energy commercialization speed up
HD KSOE, a shipbuilding unit of South Korea HD Hyundai Group, announced a major technological breakthrough. Its independently developed liquefied hydrogen storage and transportation vacuum insulation system has been certified by Lloyd's Register of Shipping, American Register of Shipping, Det Norske veritas and South Korea Classification Society. The technology adopts innovative vacuum insulation design, which can maintain the vacuum state of the storage tank in the ultra-low temperature environment of -253 ℃, shorten the traditional vacuum treatment cycle which takes several months to several days, and significantly improve the storage and transportation efficiency and safety.
this certification, HD KSOE became the first company in the world to obtain the welding process certification of DNV on board liquefied hydrogen tanks last month. Through the joint development of welding standards and evaluation system with the international classification society, the company has a comprehensive grasp of the whole chain solution from material research and development to construction technology, forming a double technical barrier. The technical team has overcome the problems of ultra-low temperature material compatibility and high volatility of hydrogen fuel to ensure that the hydrogen loss during storage and transportation is controlled within the commercially feasible range.
In order to promote the commercial application of hydrogen energy, HD Hyundai Group is building a marine hydrogen energy ecological chain with global partners such as Woodside Energy, Hyundai Glovis and Japan's Merchant Shipping Mitsui. Through the signing of a cross-border cooperation memorandum, the parties will collaborate on the development of dedicated ship designs, port infrastructure and supply chain systems, with the goal of reducing the cost of maritime hydrogen energy to the same level as traditional fuels.
"Marine hydrogen energy is the general trend," said HD KSOE technical director, "we will continue to break through the ultra-low temperature storage, material durability and other key technologies, promote the sea to become the mainstream of clean energy transportation, to provide technical support for the global energy transition. The company expects that with the establishment of a standardized technology system, the commercialization of hydrogen energy shipping will accelerate for at least three years.
