CHARACTER

1,4-Butanediol (BDO) is an important organic chemical and fine chemical raw materials, chemical formula is C4H10O2, molecular weight 90.12. Its appearance is colorless or pale yellow oily liquid, soluble in methanol, ethanol, acetone, slightly soluble in ether, miscible with water. 1,4-Butanediol is widely used in the manufacture of polybutylene terephthalate (PBT), polytetramethylene ether glycol (PTMEG), tetrahydrofuran (THF) and polyurethane, etc. It is the basic raw material for the production of high-performance plastics and high-elasticity spandex (Lycra fiber). In addition, it is also used in the preparation of vitamin B6, drugs, pesticides, herbicides and a variety of process solvents, plasticizers, lubricants, moisturizers and so on. As a multifunctional chemical raw material, 1,4-butanediol plays an important role in many industrial fields.

APPLICATIONS

(1) Polyester and polyurethane production: 1,4-Butanediol is the key raw material for the production of polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) and polyurethane (PU). PBT is a thermoplastic with excellent mechanical properties and chemical resistance. It is widely used in electronic appliances, auto parts and mechanical equipment; PU is widely used in foam plastics, elastomers, fibers and coatings.

(2) Drug synthesis: 1,4-Butanediol is an intermediate of many drugs and plays a key role in the synthesis of antibiotics, antidepressants, antihistamines, as well as vitamin B6 and some anticancer drugs.

(3) Humectants and solvents: 1,4-Butanediol is often used as a humectant and solvent in cosmetics due to its good moisturizing properties and solubility, and is used in the manufacture of facial masks, shampoos, hair conditioners and other products.

(4) Plasticizer and chain extender: It can also be used as a plasticizer and chain extender for the production of polyurethane, epoxy resin, unsaturated polyester and other polymer materials.

(5) Raw materials for fiber products: 1,4-Butanediol can be used to manufacture fiber products such as artificial silk and artificial cotton, providing important raw materials for the textile industry.

(6) Pesticide production: It can also be used as a raw material for pesticides and herbicides and play a role in agricultural production.

(7) Production of high value-added chemicals: 1,4-Butanediol can also be used to produce chemical products such as tetrahydrofuran (THF), gamma-butyrolactone (GBL) and N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP). These compounds also occupy an important position in their respective application fields.

1,4-Butanediol- Properties

Colorless oily liquid, flammable, miscible with water. Soluble in methanol, ethanol, acetone, slightly soluble in ether. Boiling point 228 ℃. Melting point 20.2 ℃. Flash point (open cup) 121 ℃. Relative density of 1. 0171. Refractive index 1. 4461.

1,4-Butanediol- Preparation method

  1. The acetylene method first reacts acetylene and formaldehyde in the presence of a Cu-Bi catalyst at 98kPa and 80-95°C to prepare 1,4-butynediol. The latter is catalyzed by skeleton nickel, hydrogenated at 1.372~2.06 MPa, 50~60 ℃ to 1,4-butenediol, followed by Ni-Cu- Mn/Al2 03 further catalytic hydrogenation (13.7 ~ 20.6MPa, 120~140 ℃) to 1,4-butanediol, removed by ion exchange resin after metal ions, and then purified by distillation.
  2. Butadiene method by 1,3 butadiene and acetic acid and oxygen for acetylation oxidation reaction, generating 1,4-= acetoxy-2-butene, and then by hydrogenation, hydrolysis.

1,4-Butanediol- Introduction

Combustible. The taste is bitter. Can be miscible with water, soluble in alcohol, slightly soluble in ether. In the coolant solidification into colorless needle-like crystals, and dilute nitric acid reaction to succinic acid, potassium carbonate solution to produce precipitation

1,4-Butanediol- Uses

Mainly used in the manufacture of tetrahydrofuran, y-butyrolactone, polyurethane and thermoplastic engineering plastics PBT resin. It can also prepare N-methyl pyrrolidone, N-vinyl pyrrolidone and other pyrrolidone derivatives, and is also used in the preparation of vitamin B6, pesticides, herbicides, and as solvents, plasticizers, lubricants, moisturizers, softeners, adhesives and brighteners for the electroplating industry.

1,4-Butanediol- Safety

  • Toxic. When attached to diseased or injured skin or when drinking, it will initially present anesthesia, causing special pathological changes in the liver and kidneys, and then sudden death due to central nerve paralysis (without prolonged latency). Rat oral LD 50 210~420 mg/kg. Production equipment shall be sealed to prevent leakage, and operators shall wear protective equipment. People with skin trauma are strictly prohibited from contact with this product.
  • Aluminum, stainless steel, galvanized iron drums or plastic drums shall be used for packaging, or tankers shall be used for storage and transportation in accordance with regulations on inflammable and toxic substances. Because the melting point is as high as 20 ℃, the tank car should be equipped with heating pipes.

1,4-Butanediol- Introduction

1,4-Butanediol (also known as butanediol or 1,4-butanediol) is an organic compound. It is a colorless, odorless liquid, viscous at room temperature.

1,4-butanediol has many important properties and applications. It is a solvent with good solubility and plays an important role in the synthesis of many organic compounds. Secondly, 1,4-butanediol has a bis-alcohol nature and can undergo a variety of reactions, such as esterification, oxidation, etherification and the like. This makes it widely used in the synthesis of polyesters, polyethers, plastics, coatings, adhesives and dyes. A common process for the preparation of 1,4-butanediol

is by the oxidation of n-butane. This reaction usually needs to be carried out at a high temperature in the presence of an oxidizing agent such as oxygen, and the presence of a catalyst is used to increase the reaction rate.
it is a combustible substance that can produce flammable vapors. Contact with open flames, high temperatures and sources of open flames should be avoided during handling. 1,4-Butanediol may also be irritating to the skin and eyes. Wear protective glasses and gloves when handling. In the event of an accident, rinse the affected area immediately with plenty of water and consult a doctor.
