SK Chemical will build a plastic circular economy system in Ulsan, covering recycling facilities, R & D centers and cross-industry cooperation to promote green plastic technology innovation and closed-loop industrial chain.
South Korea chemical giant SK Chemical recently disclosed its major strategic deployment in the field of sustainable materials, and plans to build an integrated plastic recycling solution hub in Ulsan Industrial Park by 2026. The project will focus on the high-value utilization of waste plastics and realize the closed-loop flow of resources through molecular reconstruction technology.
In terms of the construction of core facilities, the company will add a chemical recycling device with an annual processing capacity of 10,000 tons in the existing ecological plastic production base. The unit uses an innovative depolymerization process to convert mixed waste plastics into R-BHET monomers-a key intermediate for the production of food-grade polyester materials. After the project reaches production, it will produce 50 tons of high quality recycled monomers each year, providing low-carbon material options for downstream industries such as packaging and electronics.
In order to strengthen technical support, SK Chemical plans to build an advanced materials research and development center. The organization will integrate the three functions of chemical analysis, process optimization and life cycle assessment, focusing on breaking through the bottleneck of biodegradable material modification and composite recycling technology, and aiming to build a rapid transformation channel from laboratory to industrialization.
"We are reinventing the plastics economy from the raw material side. "SK Chemical CEO An Zaixian stressed at the strategy conference. Enterprises have established innovation alliances with leading enterprises in the four major fields of food and beverage, new energy vehicles, consumer electronics and fast fashion, and promote the establishment of industry-level resource recycling systems by sharing waste logistics data and jointly developing application scenarios. This cross-chain collaboration model will redefine the way plastic value is created and recycled. "
The strategy not only responds to global carbon neutrality goals, but also marks SK Chemical's transformation from a traditional chemical company to a green materials solutions provider. By building a complete value chain of "recycling-R & D-application", the company is expected to achieve a sustainable material replacement rate of 30% of its product portfolio by 2030.
