Indonesia's Ministry of Industry plans to amend regulations to promote domestic salt. The food and pharmaceutical industries will ban imported salt from 2025. The production target of domestic salt is rising year by year, and the industry has broad prospects for development.
The Indonesian Ministry of Industry is actively promoting the use of domestic salt in order to enhance the competitiveness of the domestic salt industry. It is reported that in 2023, Indonesia's salt processing industry has absorbed 557,925 tons of domestic salt. In order to further strengthen the application of domestic salt, the Ministry of Industry is working on amending the Presidential Regulation to make the use of domestic salt mandatory in industries such as chlor-alkali plants, provided that domestic salt meets industry specifications.
With the continuous growth of domestic industrial salt demand, Indonesia's Ministry of Industry has set a clear goal: the total absorption of domestic salt will reach 768,285.42 tons in 2024 and further climb to 775,702.39 tons in 2025. In order to achieve this goal, the Ministry of Industry has decided to completely ban the import of salt (except CAP items) in the food and pharmaceutical industries from January 2025. Behind this decision is the current situation that domestic salt production is difficult to meet demand. According to estimates, the gap is close to 2.4 million tons. Although the CAP industry is importing more, it is also gradually increasing its use of indigenous salt.
The development of domestic salt industry in is receiving unprecedented attention. For relevant practitioners, paying close attention to policy dynamics and changes in supply and demand will be the key to grasp future business opportunities and achieve sustainable development.
