BASF and Sika launch epoxy hardeners to provide sustainable solutions for the construction industry

Low-emission products have excellent application performance, and compared with traditional curing agents, volatile organic compounds (VOC) are reduced by up to 90%

BASF and Sika have jointly developed a new amine-based block for curing epoxy resins, which is currently on the market under BASF's Baxxodur EC 151 brand. This new development is particularly useful for flooring applications, such as in production plants, warehouses and assembly halls, as well as parking lots. Baxxodur EC 151 enables epoxy flooring solutions with low viscosity and optimal flow properties. Therefore, the coating is easy to apply and evenly distributed. Compared with traditional hardeners, the required diluent is significantly reduced, and the release of volatile organic compounds (VOC) is reduced by up to 90%. Therefore, Baxxodur EC 151 is capable of producing ultra-low VOC formulations. It also allows greater use of mineral fillers, which not only reduces costs, but also contributes to sustainable development.

Epoxy coatings formulated with Baxxodur EC 151 cure rapidly and completely over a wide temperature range. This prolongs their applicability in the colder months of the year, especially at temperatures between 5 and 10 degrees Celsius, where traditional curing agents tend to "freeze". Compared with traditional curing agents, the curing time is shortened by 2/3, which means that the coating can walk soon after application.

The cured epoxy product has a beautiful, smooth surface. Turbidity caused by fog formation (so-called "whitening") is avoided, which is usually found in the edge area with traditional curing agents. The product has excellent color stability and is resistant to mechanical and chemical influences. This makes them particularly durable and significantly reduces maintenance costs.

As part of the research collaboration, Sika has developed new amine-based blocks as high-performance curing agents for more efficient and sustainable epoxy products, which have been successfully applied in Sikafloor® floor coatings. BASF developed the right manufacturing process and expanded it from the laboratory to the production scale.

"Baxxodur development of the EC 151 is further proof of our support for our customers in their green transformation. By working with Sika, we leverage our extensive chemical expertise to successfully implement new sustainable solutions through scalable and cost-effective processes," said Vasilios Galanos, BASF's senior vice president, European Intermediates."

"Baxxodur EC 151 is an important contribution to the resource-efficient future of the construction industry. Sika's close collaboration with BASF was crucial in the development of this innovative solution, enabling our customers to better achieve their efficiency and sustainability goals," said Urs Burckhardt, Sika Research Director."
