India is bracing for a range of extreme weather conditions, with heatwave warnings in place in some areas and the threat of thunderstorms and hail in others. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued alerts on 2 and 3 April outlining these different conditions across the country.
The Indian Meteorological Department expects a heatwave in Gujarat, which is expected to continue in some parts of the country over the next week. Rajasthan will also be under a heatwave warning from April 5-8, while Gujarat and East Rajasthan are expected to experience similar weather from April 6-8 and April 7-8 respectively. The Indian Meteorological Service warned that "in the next seven days, remote areas of Saurashtra and Kuchi are likely to continue to experience heat waves; West Rajasthan from April 5 to 8; Gujarat from April 6 to 8; and East Rajasthan from April 7 to 8."
meanwhile, the states of Chhattisgarh, landlocked Karnataka and Tlangana issued an orange alert on April 3 warning of thunderstorms, lightning, gusts of wind and hail. The Indian Meteorological Department said, "Thunderstorms, lightning, gusts (40-50 km/h) and hail may occur in Chhattisgarh, inland Karnataka and Telangana states from the afternoon to night of April 3, 2025." Hail is also expected in parts of the western state of Madhya Pradesh on the same day.
Temperatures in northwestern India are expected to rise by 3 to 5 degrees Celsius in the coming week. Dr Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, head of the Indian Institute of Meteorological Management, warned that summer temperatures would be higher than in previous years, saying: "We do not expect El Niño during the monsoon season. Temperatures in April to June will be higher than in previous years and the number of hot days in many states may increase." It is expected that from April to June, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Chakhand, West Bengal, Orissa, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and northern Tamil Nadu will increase in high temperature days.
