Qatar Energy, Mesaieed, QIMC and Turkey's Atlas form joint venture to create new salt production facility
Qatar Energy announced today that it has formally signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to establish Qatar Salt Products Company (QSalt) in conjunction with Mesaieed Petrochemical Holding Company (MPHC), Qatar Industrial Manufacturing Company (QIMC) and Turkey's Atlas Yatirim Planlama. This strategic partnership marks an important step in Qatar's efforts to increase self-sufficiency and localize its industry.
It is reported that the QSalt joint venture will spend about 1 billion Qatari riyals to build a new salt factory in the Um Al Houl area of Qatar. The plant will be operated by Qatar Petrochemical Company (QAPCO) and Qatar Vinyl Company (QVC) and will form an important part of Qatar Energy's TAWTEEN localization plan.
Al-Kaabi Saad Sherida, Minister of State for Energy, President and CEO of Qatar Energy, witnessed the signing of the MOU at a special ceremony held at Qatar Energy's Doha headquarters. He said: "We are very pleased to witness the establishment of this vital joint venture. It will help Qatar to increase its self-sufficiency capacity by producing industrial and table salt to meet local demand and support regional and international exports."
Al-Kaabi further stated: "I would like to congratulate all partners and stakeholders of QSalt. I am confident that the establishment of this joint venture will further support the supply chain and industrial localization of the State of Qatar and promote sustainable environmental practices."
The chairman of QIMC, Sheikh Abdulrahman bin Mohammed bin Jabr Al-Thani, also spoke highly of this. He stressed that the pioneering project is the first in the region to produce salt from brine produced in the desalination process, fully demonstrating the application potential of advanced technology. At the same time, he also praised the positive role of the Qatar Energy Company in promoting the contribution of the private sector to the national economy.
Nusret Argun, chairman of the board of directors of Atlas Yatirim Planlama, said: "We are very proud to have entered the implementation phase of this project and participated in it throughout. This facility will be the first of its kind in the Middle East, providing localization and security of supply by meeting the demand for industrial and food grade salt. As a Turkish company in Qatar, we are very happy to be involved in such a project."
It is reported that the salt plant built by the QSalt joint venture will not only produce industrial salt necessary for the petrochemical industry, but also produce products such as bromine, potassium chloride and softened water. The later production of these products will contribute to product diversification and economic growth, further promoting Qatar's industrial development and economic prosperity.
